What Are Breast Implants?
Breast implants are synthetic inserts that make the breasts appear larger and fuller. Implants are often used for cosmetic reasons or for reconstructive purposes, such as after mastectomy for breast cancer. Two types of breast implants are available:
- Saline implants consist of silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline solution).
- Silicone implants are silicone shells filled with a plastic gel-like substance (silicone).
Benefits of Breast Implants
Some women choose breast implants because they feel that having bigger breasts would make their figure look more proportional or attractive. Other women have had their breasts removed as treatment for breast cancer, and they would like to restore their feminine figures. Regardless of the reason, breast implants can help enhance self-image and self-esteem.
How Is the Breast Implant Procedure Performed?
This surgery can be done on an outpatient basis or inpatient procedure (staying overnight in the hospital) that lasts for one to two hours. You’ll be given a general anesthetic, and then the surgeon will make precise, discreet incisions under your breasts or under your arms. The implants will be placed gently into a pocket either directly in front of or behind your chest muscles. Finally, the cuts will be closed with surgical tape or sutures.
Preparing for Breast Implants
Before your implant surgery, make sure you have realistic expectations about the procedure. You may be advised to stop taking certain medications for a few days or weeks before the surgery.
Breast Implantation Recovery
After the surgery, your breasts will be covered with gauze, and you may have drainage tubes for a few days. You’ll probably need to wear a surgical bra to aid healing. Get plenty of rest for the first few days, and avoid heavy lifting for six weeks after the procedure. If you experience any soreness or discomfort, use over-the-counter pain relievers. You may also notice some swelling; over time, this will dissipate, and the scars will fade.
How Much Do Breast Implants Cost?
The price of breast implants varies for each individual depending on the treatment goals, type of implant selected, and implant location. Artisan Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery accepts CareCredit™, Surgery Loans, and Healthcare Financing Direct as financing options.
Are Breast Implants Right for Me?
Depending on your goals and concerns, breast implants may or may not be the best alternative for you. During your consultation, we’ll examine the available options and help you select the right treatment for you.
If you are considering breast implants, you should be at least 18 years old for saline implants or 22 years old for silicone. These age limits exist because the breasts are still developing in the late teenage years.
