Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure to remove excess muscle, fat, skin, and other tissues from the eyelids. The overall goal of blepharoplasty is to improve the appearance around the eyes. While patients often choose eyelid surgery for purely cosmetic reasons, such as the reduction of puffiness, under-eye bags, and eye wrinkles, it is also a popular procedure for those who have impeded vision due to sagging skin on the upper eyelids.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?
While most patients undergoing eyelid surgery are over the age of 35, it may also be performed on younger patients, particularly in the case of vision interference or when heredity has resulted in overly large under-eye bags or drooping eyelids. Both men and women choose this procedure to achieve a youthful and well-rested facial appearance.
Although most adults can undergo blepharoplasty, a few medical conditions may increase the risk of complications, including the following:
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- High blood pressure
Eyelid Surgery With Vectra 3D
The Vectra 3D Camera helps you visualize, prior to your surgery, what you will look like after your eyelid procedure. Vectra’s simulated sculpting tools will allow Dr. Gupta to show you the expected outcome of your surgery. The camera’s 3D capabilities will provide you with a comprehensive view of both the front of your face and your profile, giving you pre-operative peace of mind about your procedure.
Eyelid surgery typically takes one to three hours and is performed under local anesthesia. The first step is the creation of incisions in natural skin folds located either above or below the eye. If one of the goals of the eyelid surgery is to reduce the appearance of “crow’s feet” wrinkles, these incisions may continue past the corners of the eyes so that the surgeon can access this tissue. In some cases, the excess tissue in the lower eyelid can be removed from behind the eyelid, rather than through an incision created for this purpose.
Next, your eyelid surgeon gently removes small areas of fat and other excess tissues from the area of the eyelids. Excess muscle or skin may be trimmed away to improve the appearance of the eye area. Once the targeted tissues have been removed or recontoured, the incision is closed using surgical tape or small sutures.
Recovery After Eyelid Surgery
After eyelid surgery, the doctor will instruct you to use antiseptic ointment or eye drops, which prevents the eyes from becoming dry. Paper tape will be used to support the eyelids in their new position. Gauze may also be used for a few days after your eyelid procedure.
