What is a Facelift?
Also known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift is used to restore the face to a more youthful appearance. It is more commonly done on women, although more and more men tend to get facelifts as well. The individual who receives it tends to feel better about themselves as a result of the younger look after undergoing the procedure.
How is a Facelift Performed?
A facelift is generally most popular among people in their 40s, 50s and 60s. They want the procedure after noticing the wrinkles and fine lines that naturally come about as a result of aging. The doctor will first administer general anesthesia to the patient and then make an incision in front of the ear. The placement is important because a scar won’t show when the incision is made there. From there, the doctor will separate the skin of the face from the muscles and tissue below and generally reshape them. The facial muscles are pulled so that they are tighter. In addition, depending on the patient, the doctor may add cheek, chin or other facial implants to add more fullness to the person’s face. Any excess skin is removed before the doctor closes the incision. Generally speaking, a facelift can take as little as two hours to as much as six depending on the individual. Most patients recover from the procedure within one to two weeks.
