Microdermabrasion, also known as “microderm” or a “power peel,” is a painless and noninvasive skin-exfoliating and rejuvenating treatment using a specialized machine. The feeling is similar to that of a cat licking your face, rough but gentle. Since it only removes the superficial layers of the skin, it is less invasive than other methods such as dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. Microdermabrasion works best for conditions on the skin’s surface.
Is Microdermabrasion Right for Me?
This treatment is favored by patients with busy lifestyles and superficial skin problems such as the following:
- Early photoaging (sun damage)
- Fine lines
- Enlarged pores
- Mild acne or acne discoloration
- Superficial scarring
- Age spots
- Dull or sallow skin
This procedure is most commonly performed on the face, but any skin can be treated such as the hands, neck, chest, or back. Since your skin regenerates itself about once a month, the results are temporary; for continued improvement, you may need to repeat this technique every two to four weeks. The best results are achieved by combining multiple sessions with sun avoidance, sunscreen, and moisturizing skin creams.
Generally, tiny crystals are gently sprayed onto the skin in such a way to remove the dead outer layer. A small vacuum removes old skin cells while stimulating increased blood circulation in the area. Around the lips and eyes, a diamond system may be preferred; instead of using crystals, a rough tip abrades the skin delicately to achieve the same results.
Since this treatment is painless, no anesthetic is required. Afterward, your skin will feel fresher and more rejuvenated.
Recovery After Microdermabrasion
Immediately after the procedure, your skin may look mildly pink; this will resolve anywhere from minutes to hours after the treatment. You skin may continue to exfoliate mildly as well. If so, continuously applying moisturizer or ointment will help preserve your skin’s texture and elasticity. Some patients notice a mild sunburn-like sensation or a slight sensitivity to sunlight for the first few days.
