Juvederm® is an injectable cosmetic filler formulated to fill in lines and wrinkles in the skin, especially in the face. This injectable treatment is formulated with hyaluronic acid (HA), which occurs naturally in the body to fill in the spaces between collagen and elastin in the skin.
The purpose of HA is to add volume and smooth the skin while keeping the skin hydrated by attracting water molecules. Over time, the body loses its ability to produce hyaluronic acid. As a result of the aging process, folds and wrinkles appear as the skin volume is reduced. Juvederm restores hyaluronic acid within the skin, improving the skin’s structure to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Is Juvederm Right for Me?
Most Juvederm patients are between the ages of 30 and 65 and are seeking to reduce visible signs of aging in their face. You should not undergo cosmetic filler injections if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, but otherwise, most adults in good overall health are able to undergo this treatment. Many different lines and wrinkles can be treated with Juvederm.
The most popular treatment areas include the following:
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet around the outer eyes
- Forehead creases
- Lines from the nose to the outer edges of the mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Lines from the corner of the mouth downwards
- Smile lines
- Adding volume to the lips (lip augmentation)
Before & After Photos
Juvederm injections take about 30 minutes. Although the injections are virtually painless, local or topical anesthesia can be used, if desired. The Juvederm solution can also be formulated with the local anesthetic lidocaine to reduce your discomfort. Your doctor will determine the amount of Juvederm gel to be injected into the treated area, as well as whether to use Juvederm Ultra™ (recommended for superficial wrinkles) or Juvederm Ultra Plus™ (for deeper folds and lines). The selected Juvederm solution is injected with a fine needle under the skin to precisely target selected wrinkles and lines.
The initial results of Juvederm injections are an increase in the volume of tissues under the skin. Hyaluronic gel attracts water, and the gel itself also results in an increase in volume. The appearance of the treated area continues to improve over a period of several weeks. Some wrinkles reappear as the gel is absorbed into the body, although many Juvederm patients find the results to be long-lasting or even permanent
Recovery After Juvederm
Juvederm is a “lunchtime procedure” requiring no downtime. Juvederm patients can continue their daily activities immediately. Makeup can be worn to camouflage any redness or bruising in the treated skin.
