Eliminating your acne improves your appearance and helps you gain self-confidence. Your battle with acne, however, may have left acne scarring on your face and other areas.
What Causes Acne Scarring?
Acne scarring can be caused by picking, but certain types of acne cause acne scarring without picking. Acne lesions, known as cysts, leave scars because they cause inflammation and damage your collagen. Collagen is the underlying structure of your skin that gives it a smooth texture and volume. Without collagen, your skin has no foundation, and the result is acne scarring.
What Does Acne Scarring Look Like?
Acne scarring appears at the site of your acne-related cyst. There are three types of acne scars:
- Shallow acne scarring known as atrophic
- Boxcar-shaped acne scarring
- Narrow and deep acne scarring that is shaped like the tip of an ice pick
If you have dark skin, you may also have hyperpigmentation, or skin darkening, within the acne scarring. People with lighter skin typically have areas of redness within the acne scarring.
