What is a Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a relatively quick surgical procedure that is normally completed in an hour. The procedure reduces the size of the labia minora (the inner lips), labia majora (the outer lips) or clitoral hood, by removing excess tissue and fat.

Labiaplasty is a procedure where the labia minora is shortened to become the same length as the labia majora, creating a symmetrical appearance. This surgery is a good choice for women who have experienced hypertrophy due to puberty, pregnancy or childbirth. Many times the labia is extended or stretched during childbirth, causing discomfort on a day-to-day basis. As women age they can also experience discomfort due to the laxity of labial tissue. This surgery is available for women of all ages who are concerned about a disproportionate labia. The goal of this surgery is to relieve discomfort and promote confidence.

If you experience pain and irritation frequently from your labia or feel self-conscious about its length, a labiaplasty may be a good solution for you.

A labiaplasty is a corrective surgery that involves reshaping the outer female genitals by removing excess fat and tissue. Patients can receive a reduction of the labia minora or have excess tissue removed from the labia majora. A clitoral hood reduction is also an option. the doctor will work with you to create the best option, or combination of options, for your cosmetic goals.

Labiaplasty is helpful for any woman experiencing irritation from an extended labia. The doctor will be discreet and delicate while helping you achieve the goal you deserve.

The doctor will ask you about your medical history and any previous cosmetic treatments you have undergone. He will also ask about any current prescriptions, drug allergies, vitamins or herbal supplements. This is to assess whether you are a healthy candidate for labiaplasty. The doctor will walk you through the procedure, risks and the recovery. You are encouraged to ask questions and voice any concerns. Our staff are here to help you feel confident and at ease.

Preparation

Prior to the surgery, you will need to coordinate for a family member or friend to pick you up after the operation.

We recommend you wear loose, comfortable clothes with elastic bands. If the surgery occurs during your period, you do not have to worry. It is safe to get the surgery while on your period, however it may add to your discomfort. This particularly pertains to women who may be more sensitive during their menstruations.

Two weeks before the surgery, you will need to stop any blood thinning medication to ensure a healthy recovery. If you smoke, you will need to quit at least two weeks before the procedure because smoking can cause circulatory complications and may affect the operation and healing process.

Techniques

The doctor will perform the surgery using the most modern concepts and techniques. Local anesthesia is typically used during this procedure, however general anesthesia can also be administered. Every surgery is different based on the patient’s body and goals.

Wedge Method

The wedge method may be a good choice if there is irregular labia hypertrophy and hood reduction is also needed. This procedure removes extra tissue from the middle of the labia using a pie shape. The doctor will then delicately sew together the upper and lower areas of the labia. This procedure maintains the natural borders, creating a well-balanced appearance.

Benefits

Labiaplasty has both practical and cosmetic benefits. Most women who experienced pain regarding their labia report relief after the surgery. Patients also report a high satisfaction rate with the surgery. Benefits of the procedure include:

  • Boosted confidence
  • Tight clothes do not cause discomfort
  • Intimacy is comfortable and less painful
  • Improved aesthetic appearance
  • Ease of movement during exercise

Recovery

It is crucial to remain hygienic during this time period to ensure a fast and healthy recovery. Most patients take a few days off from work to remain comfortable during the initial healing process. You should be able to return to work two to five days after the surgery.

Swelling should dissipate after 72 hours.

Following the procedure, patients will experience swelling and discomfort. It is recommended to use ice packs regularly combined with elevating the pelvis to lessen the swelling. An antiseptic ointment will need to be administered along with light bandages to help the healing process along.

Tampons cannot be used up to four to six weeks. Exercise and sexual intimacy will need to be avoided for four weeks following the procedure. Some people can return to work after a few days, but as each person is different, their recovery time is as well. The sutures used in the procedure are delicate and absorbable so as to promote comfort and convenience. These sutures will dissolve within seven to twenty-one days depending on the type used.

Labiaplasties are known to have quick, successful recoveries and scars are very uncommon.

If a patient is interested in relieving any extra discomfort they may speak with the doctor about medication.

Results

After the recovery process, patients will notice a symmetrical and “tighter” appearance to the outer genitals. Any discomfort like twisting or pinching that was previously experienced should be gone. The length of the labia should no longer deter the patient from enjoying bike rides, intimacy and wearing tight clothes like swimsuits. Keep in mind that the results will vary for each person depending on what they want accomplished by the procedure.

Complementary Treatments

A common surgery performed during labiaplasty is a clitoral hood reduction. During a labiaplasty, the tissues are reduced. This may cause the skin around your clitoris to appear more prominent. A clitoral hood reduction may be recommended if there is an imbalance in the appearance of the outer genitalia. This procedure would remove any extra tissue surrounding the clitoris and create a symmetrical appearance.
